Skylar Wang

[⚠️Trigger Warning⚠️: Flashing Lights]

Derived from my longtime obsession with the studies of astrophysics, engineering, and outer space in general, this project encapsulates my personal understandings and feelings of human behaviors exhibited in our exploration and expansion toward science and space.

Under the tense atmosphere of an almost emerging Neo Cold War, exhibiting heightened political confrontations on all ends within the 2020s, the exploration and imagination toward the outer space has become my place of solace and hope as a multicultural and multinational person of science and art. However, this area appears to be just as complicated and contaminated by the aspects of aggression and nationalism rooted in humanity, generating the feeling of ambiguity, ambivalence, and anxiety, a sensation perhaps shared by many young adults of our time toward the future.

Facilitating my past experiences and knowledge of techniques and materials used in cosplay, sculptures, prop designs, and various other performative arts, this project intends to comment on the overall sustainability of human developments in the face of war and wellness. Blurring the lines between mechanisms and organisms in both the alienated other and the terrestrial self, while focusing on augmentation, mutation, and adaptation, this project may hopefully yield some perspectives on our further understanding and even possible directions on the future of humanity for its furtherance.

Bio
Skylar Wang
Through the imaginative structures extending beyond the natural human forms, the endless explorations of experimental techniques, as well as the consistent aesthetic of the extravagantly extraterrestrial, Skylar Wang’s fashion practices may be considered a hybrid of wearable and installation arts.
Drawing inspirations from the dangerously bizarre and slightly distorted reality of earthly living, Skylar creates fashion items derived from her collective works of writings, comics, paintings, sculptures, animations, and virtual creatures, all embodying her transgressive, humorous, and often surrealistic responses toward the world around her, generating interactive wearable arts of futuristic theatricality that exists beyond performative platforms. With a deep fascination with technologies in different realms of arts and inventions, she strives to be a part of the bridge between different territories as well as between the present and the future, thereby hopefully paving ways for what is possible in multidisciplinary endeavors that set out to surprise and amaze.
