Introduction

What is a paradox? By definition, a paradox is a statement that contradicts itself, or even a person that has contradictory characteristics or qualities. But some say that each paradox is a key to its truth. Human evolution is driven by raising intensive curiosity of questions and dilemmas, and then achieving a longed for answer that satisfies their hollow but pretentious minds. The collection “run tan du’s Paradoxes” addresses different paradoxes throughout history with each individual look; expresses the philosophical and sentimental value of the paradoxes from written contexts to fashion and art.
The collection is extremely challenging and adventurous to make as the amount of visual research could be done is heavily insufficient, but it shows the beauty of words and how imaginary human brains are. One of the reasons why paradoxes exist is the defectiveness of languages or semantics. If humans are both created and creators, we code our creations to be either extremely compliant towards human orders, or somehow with defects that they could never surpass us or revolt our domination. However, is the defensiveness of our languages and semantics truly a blemish or a punishment?

Runtan “Desmond” Du and his works are strongly inspired by archeology and anthropology which are in dedication of anti-discrimination and world-peace. His collections reflect upon different historical events and phenomena in order to conclude philosophical enlightenments that guide the audiences towards the ideal utopian society that he envisions. “A flawless utopian society is unachievable because of the scarcity of resources we have on this planet, but during the process of us sharing the abundance of our resources, the world gets better,” ventured by Du. His label “run tan du” debuted during Shanghai Fashion Week in 2020 with its SS21 collection and his most recent collection was showcased during NYFW in September, 2022.
